Contrary to popular belief, you do not always need to seek debt help from an outside source like a debt consolidation company or consumer credit counselor. There are ways that you can fix your own financial woes. You can get yourself out of debt and clean up your credit report on your own. Seeking debt help from another company can often end up costing you more money - either in direct fees or in years of accumulated interest. Why pay extra money for debt help from others when you can help yourself.
The first thing you can do to get out of debt is call your creditors and try to negotiate lower interest rates. Debt help companies offer to do this for you, but there is no reason you cannot do this for yourself. Most lenders are especially cooperative if they see that you have made several months of timely payments. They will drop your interest rates as long as you agree to continue making timely payments. However, you pay high interest rates again in the event that you miss a payment.
Another thing that debt help companies claim to do is improve your credit score. You can do this on your own as well. It will take some time and discipline, but it will not cost you a cent. Debt help companies will charge you a fee to do this for you. Simply get all three copies of your credit report, review them for errors, and have them fixed. Then maintain timely payments, stop making credit inquiries, and stop switching between credit card companies. Over time, you will see fewer marks on your credit report and a higher credit score.
